The book as structural artifact
Notes on why design is not decoration, and the page is an architecture.
A book is not a container for text. It is an object with a shape, a weight, a rhythm — a structure the reader's hand comes to know.
The margin is not empty space; it is a silence with a job to do. The typeface is not a font choice; it is a voice. When we design a book, we are building something to be held and returned to, not merely consumed.
